Radiated or Copperhead rat snake (Coelognathus radiatus)

FotoRadiatus

The Asian Radiated rat snakes are among the few Colubrids in my stock. They live in some areas similar to those of Python breitensteini, this explains my interest in these animals. My very own fascination lies in the spectacular defensive behavior of these completely harmless animals. In an apparent danger this Rat snakes inflate their patterned neck and put it in an S-shape. To an enemy this behavior (coupled with the sharp hissing sounds) should be very threatening. Most animals in the terrarium however lose their "Cobra posturing" over some time, most of my offsprings almost never show it.

The distribution of the Copperhead rat snake extends from India through large parts of Southeast Asia to China. There they prefer forested areas, cultural landscapes and villages in up to 1,500 m above sea level as their habitat. Of particular note: This species is mainly active during the day – a rarity with snakes. I take care of an albino male (T + albino) with several normally colored and het females. The group is getting along excellent and grants me several times a year clutchs of 5-13 eggs.
