Boas

Subspecies and Color morphs of Boa constrictor

The scientific name of Boa constrictor is derived from the latin word "constringere" = "stragle". This refers to the hunting behaviour of Boas. In spite of decades of husbandry, this gigantic snake still retains its majestic essence.

At birth Boa constrictor only measure 25–58 cm. These cute little snakes will become, within a few years (especially if they are female) giant snakes of up to 3 m length, which by the way are not by far the largest of their family: Anacondas, Rock pythons, Reticulated pythons, Amethyst and Tiger pythons are significantly larger and often grow in shorter time.

Impressive specimens of Boa constrictor with over 4 m in length are rare – in the countries of origin as well as in European terrariums. This is mainly because not all subspecies ever reach such proportions. 7–11 subspecies for Boa constrictor are acknowledged, the taxonomists disagree slightly due to the lack of comparable data.

Here you will find more about the subspecies, local forms and color morphs I own.

Other Boas

In addition to the Boa constrictors, I care for Haitian Boas (Calicos). Furthermore I added Madagascan Tree Boas recently to my stock – the fulfilment of a dream I had for years.
